Creatine has a reputation problem, but not the one you would expect.
The problem is not that people think it is unsafe. It is that almost everyone thinks it is a muscle thing — including plenty of people who take it every day.
Your brain has been quietly running on the same system all along.
Start with the energy
Every cell in your body runs on ATP. It is the molecule that powers movement, thought, repair, everything. When a cell does work, ATP gives up part of itself and becomes ADP, which is no longer usable.
Creatine's job is to hand that missing piece back, turning ADP into ATP again. It is a recycling system, and it is fast.
Now the relevant detail. Your brain is roughly two per cent of your body weight and consumes around twenty per cent of your energy at rest. Proportionally, it is the most demanding organ you own.
It uses the same ATP system your muscles do. Which means it draws on the same creatine.
What the research points to
Creatine is stored in the brain as well as in muscle, and brain stores can be influenced by intake.
Research suggests the effects are most noticeable when your system is under strain rather than when everything is going well. Specifically:
Sleep deprivation, where cognitive performance tends to decline sharply
Mentally demanding tasks that require sustained working memory
Periods of stress or fatigue
The pattern across studies is less about making a rested, well-fed brain sharper, and more about how far performance drops when conditions are poor. That is a meaningful distinction, and it is the honest way to describe it.
Why vegetarians may notice more
Dietary creatine comes from meat and fish. If you eat neither, your intake from food is close to zero and your body is producing all of it alone.
Research suggests vegetarians and vegans typically have lower baseline creatine stores, and some studies indicate they show more pronounced cognitive responses to supplementation than meat eaters do.

What it does not do
It is worth being clear about the ceiling.
Creatine is not a nootropic in the way that phrase is usually sold. It will not make you smarter, it will not replace sleep, and the effects are not something you feel arrive the way caffeine announces itself.
What it appears to do is support the energy system your brain already depends on, so that a bad night or a long week costs you slightly less than it otherwise would.
That is a smaller claim than most supplement marketing makes. It also happens to be one with actual research behind it.
The everyday version
Most people reading this are not training for anything. You have a full calendar, a commute, a job that is mentally demanding, and some days you simply do not sleep well.
That is the situation creatine is quietly useful in. Not because it is a performance supplement, but because your brain is an energy-hungry organ having a difficult week and creatine helps it recycle energy faster.
It takes 3 to 5 grams a day and about two to four weeks of consistency before stores are properly topped up.
